Did you know that there is a family who in 2017 decided it was time to put all bets on Bitcoin and decided to go all-in by selling everything they have? A documentary following their lives over three years has just been completed.
Back in 2017, the Taihuttu family took a gamble that would change their lives forever. They sold their house, car, and personal effects to buy Bitcoin, earning them the moniker “The Bitcoin Family.” Didi Taihuttu, his wife, their three children, and even the family cat, embraced a new life at a Dutch campsite, all in on the cryptocurrency wave. It turned out a good move, with Bitcoin hovering around $1,000 at the time, surging 60x to it’s value today of a little above $60,000.
During an interview with CNBC, Didi Taihuttu expressed their mindset at the time: “We were just like – sell it, sell it, what can we lose? Yeah, we can lose all the material stuff. Yeah, we can lose all our money. Yeah, we don’t have three cars anymore. We don’t have the motorcycle anymore. But in the end, I think we, as a family, will still be happy and just enjoying life.” The family shifted from Bitcoin mining to trading various cryptocurrencies, including ether, ripple, neo, dogecoin, and XLM. Their trading income is modest but sufficient, as Taihuttu puts it, “We just need a few thousand per month to live on so our performance is not really important to us.”
Sharing their journey on social media such as YouTube and Instagram, the Taihuttu family also accepts bitcoin donations. “A lot of people have lost their faith in the current monetary system,” Taihuttu remarked. “And I think that cryptocurrency is a big alternative for those people.”
To safeguard their investment, the Taihuttus use cold storage hardware wallets hidden in multiple countries. “I have hidden the hardware wallets across several countries so that I never have to fly very far if I need to access my cold wallet, in order to jump out of the market,” Taihuttu told CNBC a few years later. These wallets are stashed in places like rental properties, storage units, and friends’ homes, strategically located across four continents.
Now, almost seven years into their Bitcoin adventure, the Taihuttus’ story is being documented in a four-part series on Amazon’s PrimeVideo. This documentary, which has been following their journey for nearly three years, is set to release on April 5th, aligning with the birthday of Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The initial release will be in the Netherlands and Belgium, with a wider international release planned thereafter
